Headmaster's Weekly Address

08-Feb-2018

Dear Parents

A fine start by all would be my observation, having visited all our campuses. There is purpose and energy evident in boys and staff. It is so good to have the school in action, full of the voices and personalities of our boys, after weeks of preparation.

At the first Heyington Assembly, I introduced the boys to a fellow Kevinian of particular significance. On 1 March, William (Bill) Perazzo, will be 97. It is my belief he is our most senior Old Collegian. I was able, courtesy of Bill’s generosity and computer skills, to share photographs of a ‘dapper dinner-suited’ young man, the age of our current Year 12, a patriotic member of the RAAF in World War II and the retired, senior public servant, who in post career, did much volunteer work for his Church. Bill’s life of service, academic and professional success, family and community focus, is joyously similar to so many Kevinians. Our hope, my vocation, is to ensure that our current students make use of their God-given talents now and in their future, always conscious that their talents and success be shared beyond their immediate family, for the ‘common good’ of the society in which they live. Introductions to the men of our past 100 years, will be one of the gifts our students of 2018 will receive throughout the year.

In Smith Hall, the Prefects and Officers of the College were introduced. They will receive their badges at assemblies across the next two weeks. They know, as do all student leaders at St Kevin’s, that leadership is about service and the other. Leaders have now also been appointed across most sports and activities.

Some extraordinary sporting achievements across the holidays were recognised with Excellence Certificates:

Year 11  Thomas Fogarty
Thomas Captained the Victorian U-18 Futsal team at the National Championships in Sydney over the holidays. The Victorian team won the Title with a 2 to 0 victory over NSW in the Grand Final. Thomas was Man of the Match in the Grand Final and scored one of Victoria’s two goals. Over the seven games played, Thomas scored five goals.

Year 10  Max Leiner
Max contested the recently held Victorian Junior State Track Cycling Championships. He won gold in the Individual Pursuit, the Sprint, the Kieran, and the Individual Time Trial. His performances have won him State team selection.

Year 8  Gus Simpfendorfer
In December of 2017, Gus attended the National All Schools Track & Field Championships in Perth. Gus won the U-14 400m Title in the time of 50.41. This time was an SKC U-14 & U-15 Record (broke an Alex Rowe performance), was a Victorian U-14 record, and the fastest ever by an U-14 Australian.

At the full Staff Conference last week, I presented the Fathers’ Association sponsored Teachers’ Awards. They were presented to:

Full College  Mr Andy Klupacs
Heyington  Mr Tim Krake
Waterford  Ms Sarah Glenister
Glendalough  Ms Sarah Maple

Colleagues have enjoyed meeting parents at the first of our Parent Information Nights and I do encourage attendance at these crucial evenings, most importantly, to meet your son’s Tutor and Homeroom Teacher. You will be subjected to a few words from the Headmaster, but the quality of what follows will more than compensate for patience and attentiveness during my address!

If you are new to St Kevin’s, please make the effort to come to the Welcome to New Parents this Friday evening in Smith Hall at Heyington, commencing at 7.45pm. Be you Preparatory, Year 5, Year 7 or any other Year level, you will be made most welcome by our Parent Associations, Senior Staff and Student Leaders. The evening is a great introduction to the College.

I am looking forward to conversations, happy and varied, whimsical and serious, as we meet at school, events or at sport on Saturdays. Please feel free to introduce yourself at any time.

Kind regards

Stephen F Russell
