Headmaster's Weekly Address

27-Jul-2017

Dear Parents

It was good to begin Week 2 with a full Heyington Assembly. My personal thanks were added to those expressed by Mr Jones in last week’s Newsletter, to all the boys and staff who had participated successfully in studies and co-curricular activities across the holidays. Dominic Holden of Cusack House, was appointed to the leadership role of Officer, recognising his generous and effective contributions to House and College life across first Semester. Sister Margaret Fyfe accepted our Project Compassion fundraising, in her capacity as Deputy Chair of Caritas Australia and addressed the boys on the significance of small actions combining to produce real societal change, and on the need for the young to be well-informed on current issues and affairs. Sister Margaret highlighted the impact of climate change on many poor areas in the Pacific.

Later in the day, I headed to Richmond where I was able to hear of the excellent preparation that had been completed to make RICE a real success in 2017. Our staff and lads will be spread across the country in challenging, beautiful areas of historic and environmental significance over the next two weeks. Do keep them all in your thoughts and prayers as they journey toward increased self-awareness and maturity.

Senior School House Masses have commenced this week with Eucharist celebrated in the Smith Hall. The refurbished and expanded Chapel of St Kevin is but days away from resuming its central role in our College life. A number of families have formally requested that a pew carry a relative’s name in memorium. Any final requests would need to be made through Mrs Ryan, my EA, by phoning 9832 4967 or via email ryanp@stkevins.vic.edu.au.

I am looking forward to a full round of sports visits on Saturday and wish all a rewarding and enjoyable second semester. Stories of the Russells’ travel across the Baltic will emerge in the coming weeks in various platforms and places, but I am grateful for the leave and refreshed and reinvigorated for the terms ahead.

With best wishes

Stephen F Russell
